The traditional job hunt can be crowded and slow. Learn three practical ways to find opportunities earlier, get noticed on LinkedIn and turn your experience into proof that employers remember.

FIRST

Most jobseekers see a vacancy only after it has been advertised and hundreds of people may already be looking at it. But a great job search is not only about applying faster. It is also about making the right connections, being discoverable and showing the value you can bring before the hiring decision is made.

Why getting there early matters

Job boards are useful, but they are only one part of recruitment. A company might first explore its existing network, review people it already knows or ask colleagues for referrals. Sometimes a team knows it needs help long before a polished job advertisement appears.

That does not mean there is a hidden job waiting at every company or that reaching out guarantees an interview. It means that candidates who are already known for their skills may be easier to remember when a genuine opportunity emerges.

JOB SULTAN TIP

Start with a shortlist of employers whose work matches your strengths. Learn what those companies do and who leads the teams you could realistically contribute to. Relevance matters more than sending hundreds of unsolicited messages.

01Hack 1: Reach out before the job is posted

Here is an advantage many applicants overlook: some hiring needs develop before a vacancy becomes public. Managers have to define the role, secure approval, prepare the advert and find time to interview people. External recruiters can also add a substantial cost; in some markets, permanent-placement fees may be calculated as a percentage of a successful hire’s annual salary.

Now imagine a hiring manager reads a genuinely useful message from someone with the right experience and thinks, “We may need someone like this soon.” You have not bypassed the normal recruitment process, but you have introduced yourself at a useful moment.

How to approach the company without sounding generic

  • Choose a real match. Target companies and departments where your experience can solve a recognizable problem.
  • Find the right contact. A relevant manager or recruiter is more useful than a random senior executive.
  • Keep the introduction brief. Share one specific result, explain your interest and offer to connect.
  • Respect the hiring process. If a company directs all applicants to an official careers page, follow those instructions.
OUTREACH TEMPLATE

“Hello [Name], I’ve been following [Company]’s work in [area]. I recently [specific result], and I think that experience could be useful for your team. If opportunities arise in [function], I’d welcome a short conversation.”

02Hack 2: Make LinkedIn work for you

LinkedIn is not only a place to announce that you are looking for work. Employers and recruiters can use it to identify people who match a role, even when those people have not applied. Your profile is therefore both a professional introduction and a potential way to be discovered.

There is no reliable universal percentage of candidates recruited through LinkedIn or of applications seen by humans through applicant-tracking systems. Different companies use very different hiring workflows. The actionable lesson is simpler: do not rely on a single application channel to make your experience visible.

Your LinkedIn visibility checklist

  • Headline: state what you do and the skills or sector you work in, not just “looking for opportunities.”
  • About section: explain the problems you solve and the results you have delivered.
  • Experience: use clear job titles, relevant keywords and genuine achievements.
  • Activity: share useful professional insights, contribute meaningfully to discussions and keep your profile current.
  • Recommendations: request specific, truthful references from people familiar with your work.
PROFILE CHECK

Read your profile as a recruiter would. In ten seconds, can somebody see what you do, where you add value and which kinds of roles suit you? If not, make those details more obvious before posting more frequently.

03Hack 3: Use the CAAR method to stand out

When a recruiter asks about your experience, listing job responsibilities is rarely the most memorable answer. Instead, show the effect of your work. The CAAR method gives your story four simple parts:

  • C — Context: What was happening? What problem or opportunity existed?
  • A — Action: What did you actually do?
  • A — Approach: What made your method different, effective or thoughtful?
  • R — Result: What changed because of your contribution?

See the difference

Ordinary CV statement: “Managed a sales team.”

“In a declining market (Context), I restructured our sales strategy (Action) by focusing on existing client upsells (Approach), resulting in a 25% revenue increase in six months (Result).”

Illustrative example — only use figures and results that are true for your own work.

The same structure can help with interviews, LinkedIn descriptions and CV achievement bullets. If you cannot quantify the result, describe a genuine outcome: improved reliability, smoother handovers, fewer errors, faster delivery or better customer feedback.

Put all three hacks to work this week

You do not need a huge daily routine. Use one focused week to make progress on all three fronts and then repeat what works:

  • Day 1 — Target: shortlist ten employers and identify the teams where your skills are relevant.
  • Day 2 — Connect: write two or three carefully researched messages rather than copying the same introduction to everyone.
  • Day 3 — Improve: update your LinkedIn headline, About section and recent accomplishments.
  • Day 4 — Prove: write three accurate CAAR stories based on work you genuinely completed.
  • Day 5 — Apply: search suitable opportunities on Job Sultan and tailor your application to the role.

Continue to use official job advertisements and employer application processes. Early networking complements genuine applications; it does not replace eligibility checks, proper recruitment steps or professional boundaries.

Final thought: be ready to be found

Most jobseekers wait until an opening appears. Candidates who prepare early give themselves a chance to be remembered before a vacancy reaches a crowded job board.

Reach out where you can genuinely help, build a LinkedIn profile that makes your strengths easy to find, and explain your achievements with CAAR. You cannot control when a business decides to hire—but you can control how ready and visible you are when it does.

Finding the right job matters. Making it easier for the right employer to find you matters too.
